Human Brain, and Its Incredible Complexity
Contains 86 billion neurons with an average of 5000 interconnections per neuron – but up to as many as10,000. This computes to a staggering 430,000,000,000,000 – 430 trillion connections. The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the brain consisting of six layers or cells and was the last part of the brain to evolve, hence it’s also called the ‘neocortex’ or new cortex. It is the crinkled surface that you see in pictures of the brain and has many convolutions; gyri and sulci which the increase surface area and the capacity for interconnections. All of this seems crucial to our abilities to be intuitive, creative and to think abstractly.
