How did life on Earth begin, when and where did it start? Was there more than one origin? When did organic chemistry become biology i.e., life, a process called abiogenesis? Chemistry based on carbon is incredibly varied and can be extremely complex, it is thought that at some point under suitable conditions some of the molecules or aspects of this complex carbon based organic chemistry became able to reproduce themselves. Once that happened then random variations or errors arose in the reproduction or copying process. Most of these errors or mutations were likely fatal or disadvantageous, but some may have conferred an advantage and so that variation or mutant molecule could have become more prevalent within the local environment. Thus the process of evolution and speciation began.
